Looking at Randy's won'nerful O scale Chalk Creek Layout I notice a familier car. Then while digging thru old photos the other day I came across another of Uncle Bender's Colorado shots. This car, along with 0115 was actually assigned to the B&B water service. A more thorough description was published in the May 1996 (iirc) issue of Model Railroader.
Derrell, Thanks for posting the picture of C&S car number 0114 taken by your Uncle Bender. Your workmanship on the car and Uncle Bender's photograph are first rate. Your MR article was complete and inspired the building of my car. Randy
I never figured out which revenue car 0114 came from but I knew the series. So I picked a number that had little history to it - so far as I could tell. What I'm saying is don't take 7472 literally. It seems to have first appeared on the roster around 1910 but it could have been in use earlier. And it appears that it lasted until the mid '30s. I used the Folio drawing of 080 for the interior layout as I believe thay were similar cars.
Brother d, awesome model! Where do I start to get one of them? Modeling water service cars makes so much sense, as the cars would run as part of a regular train and can be set out at a water tank.
The only place I know of (in Sn3) would be at your work bench. Plans of this car are in the May 1996 issue of MR.... Ummmm, or if you cannot find that issue, WHEN I have time I MIGHT be able to copy those plans for you. But please put some serious effort into finding that issue as I barely have time to breath.Trucks are available from TLS depending on what boxcar you start with.
If they had one. But 0114 was converted from a 27 foot car. The only 28 foot cars the C&S had were the first 4 cars built in Trinidad in 1897. These were the 7714 series. IIRC three of those were off the roster by the time 0114 was built. And even more basic is the hints that they had been rebuilt to 30 foot. So. Twenty Eight foot wasn't a typical C&S size. And 0114 wasn't one of those.
When... if.... TLS offers a 27 foot box car it would be a good place to start.... maybe this would be a good project for a venture into scratch building?
Thanks Brother D. He once starred in a black & white movie - in Color. He is the most interesting Dog in the world. Roper doesn't always say much but when he does the cows listen...
Robert, nope... [scratches head...] that was gramma's show. And it was in Color too!
Randy, you only get so much money when you write an article like that. (Sometimes you don't get any money at all even when you've been promised). So the greatest reward and the one that pays repeatedly is when you find out you've helped someone else with their projects. So far this car has been built twice again, that I know of; your car and another in HOn3. Hope there are more. And that’s why I write here. No pretense of expertise to live up to. No image to uphold. No good ol' boys to face off! No Society rules, hall of fame or sponsors to piss off. Just useful information (I hope). Everyone is welcome to take it or leave it.
Cimarron had a 27 foot DSP&P boxcar. It probably could be converted fairly easily into a UPD&G (ex-KC) boxcar. Ever once in a while these show up on ebay. But they were produced in 2003 and were flat kits so they are pretty rare...
In talking with Bill Meredith I know he wants to do a TLS kit of these cars. A lot depends on how the current batch of cars sell. They seem to be doing well...

Recent issues of Bogies &Loop have had good drawings of C&S boxcars and MOW cars,in fact the last issue had 2-3 of them
ReplyDeleteDidn't Cimmaron have a UPD&G boxcar?How long was it?

What ever happened to scratch building?
